Merrinee North 70 km Handicap, Werrimull Road, Saturday 5 September 2009
The Old Fox Leads the Way
Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club staged a 70 km out and back handicap road race on Saturday 5 September 2009. The out and back race started from the Red Cliffs Lawn Cemetery on Werrimull Road and headed past the grain silo’s at Merrinee before turning around. Twenty five seniors contested the event, which was held in fine conditions with a moderate north westerly providing a cross headwind on the outward leg. Twelve juniors contested a 30 km handicap on Werrimull Road, turning around at Meridian Road.
The senior starting field was split into four bunches, with a whopping 32 minutes separating limit from scratch. The limit group of Rachel Hanlin, Kevin Gregory, Mick Allford and Ken Dean used their handicap to advantage and stayed away from the rest of the field. The quartet fought out a sprint finish, with the Old Fox Kevin Gregory proving too quick for his fellow competitors. Hanlin took second place from Dean and Allford. It was a lonely day for the six scratch riders as they failed to catch any of the front groups. Kevin Tankard attacked the scratch bunch with 8 km remaining and time trialled to the finish to take fastest time in 1:40:54 hours (average speed 41.6 km/h).
The twelve juniors were split into five starting groups, with the four chopping block riders taking the race honours. Despite starting 11:30 minutes behind the sole limit rider they easily reeled in the front runners whilst holding off the four scratch riders. Nathan Jordan (JM15) took first place from Tyler Beruldsen (JM13), with Brodie Athorn (U/19) and Tom Allford (JM13) taking the next two places. Shane Martin (U/19) came home in sixth place to take the fastest time of 55:43 minutes.
Thanks to Penny Hale, Julieanne Ryan, Murray Langley, Barry Pollock, Dean Taylor and Simon Wilkinson for helping out today. The final event of the season will be a graded criterium on the Seventh Street circuit on Sunday 6 September 2009. Results:
