Riders Test the Meridian Wind Tunnel!
Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club staged a 40 km individual time trial along Meridian Road, Merbein South on Saturday 15 August. With the northerly wind gusting up to 50 km/h, the 32 competitors faced a block headwind on the outward legs of the course. Whilst the tailwind on the return legs was welcome, with some riders reporting speeds of over 60 km/h, the headwind on the first and third legs meant that few PB’s were achieved.
Ken Dean was one rider to set a new PB on the day, despite having to ride on his regular road bike after breaking the chain on his TT rig whilst warming up! Garry Pitt also set a new PB for the 40 km distance, managing to keep both tyres inflated on today’s run. The third rider to PB the distance was Brodie Athorn, knocking 3:03 minutes off her previous best for 20 km! The fastest senior time of the day was set by Gary Henderson in 1:01:56 hours (average speed 39.3 km/h). It was a father and son affair with Thomas Henderson setting the fastest junior time in 36:53 minutes (average speed 32.5 km/h).
Thanks to Penny Hale, Julieanne Ryan, Ben Nicholson, Garry Pitt, Barry Pollock and Mark Phillips for helping out on the day. The next event is the Werrimull Inter-Club, to be held on Saturday 22 August at Werrimull. This race will also incorporate the cycling leg of the Mildura Masters Games, with 25 Masters cyclists expected to compete, including the current New Zealand elite road champion, Gordon McCauley.
