Club Kit 2012

Guys

The Club has designed a new riding kit for 2012 and we are taking orders now!

Attached is the artwork for the new kit and some sizing charts.  It is a quite a change from our previous design and we hope you agree that it looks pretty cool!

Prices are as follows:

·        Jerseys - $85.00

·        Knicks (without bib) - $85.00

·        Bib knicks - $105.00

·        Skin suits - $180.00

Orders will close on Sunday 5 February and the Club expects to take delivery of the new kit by the middle of March.

In previous years the Club has been stuck with clothing that members have ordered but haven’t collected (and hence haven’t paid for).  To avoid this occurring again the Club will only take your order if you make full payment at the time of ordering … no payment means no order.

Orders can be placed on race days with the Race Secretary or via email to the Secretary.  Payment can be made via EFT as follows:

Account Name: Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club

Extra TT Event

The Club will stage an extra time trial event at Riverside on Wednesday 28 December starting at 6 pm.  For those that get a bit "toey" during the normal Christmas/New Year break in racing this will be a great way to get your regular fix!

Nominations can be done in the usual way on MyLaps and will close on Monday 26 December at midnight.

The event will not accrue race (or team) points but you will be credited with a new PB if you ride one on the night.

Vale Terry Miller

It is with deep sadness that the Club advises that one of its members, Terry Miller, passed away on Tuesday 13 December 2011.

Terry had just finished competing in the Club's Tuesday evening time trial and had returned to the start/finish area when he collapsed.  Terry received immediate assistance from those members and bystanders present and an ambulance was called for straight away.  Terry was transferred via an ambulance to the base hospital but unfortunately he passed away.

On behalf of all members the Club expresses its condolences to Terry's wife Toni and their family and friends.  Terry was a highly respected member of the Club who regularly competed and he will be sorely missed.  Terry had been riding and competing in cycling races, triathlons and ironman events for many years and his passing will be felt by all who knew him.

The Club would like to thank all those who assisted Terry last night.

Team Standings as of 30 October

A good turnout of Cafe Ninety 4 riders at today's Merbein West graded scratch road race saw this team jump to the top of the provisional standings.  After having trailed the other two teams all season, Cafe Ninety 4 riders took wins in the D Grade and Juniors race today and picked up minor placings in the other three grades.

Provisional standings as of 30 October are as follows:

1.  Team Cafe Ninety 4 - 2023 points

2.  Team Malidot Building & Develoment - 1978 points

3.  Team Pizza Cafe Mildura - 1940 points

Please note that standings are provisional as no riders have yet completed the requisite number of qualifying races for the season (3 criteriums, 3 road races, 3 time trials and 4 other events).

Spring Tour Results

The 2011 Spring Tour was run today on the Riverside circuit.  As usual the event was a two stage format with the first stage being a 16 km ITT (8 km juniors) and the second stage a 40 km handicap road race (24 km juniors).  Twenty seven senior riders and three juniors lined up for the race, which was held in warm conditions.  The temperature hit the 30 degrees Celsius mark by the time the road race started, with the heat being fanned by a strengthening northerly wind.

Individual stage results can be found on MyLaps by clicking on the following link:

http://www.mylaps.com/results/showevent.jsp?id=729466

Points were awarded to riders based on their finishing place in each stage, with 3 bonus points being awarded to those riders who set a new personal best time for the ITT.  As it turned out, only Yap Williams and Megan Hale managed to set new PB's on the day.  Fastest time for the road race would also attract 3 bonus points, if the fastest rider finished outside of the first three places.  Kev Tankard won the road race and set fastest time so he missed out on the extra points!

Overall results were as follows (seniors):

1.  Kevin Tankard (PCM) 100 points

2.  Dean Taylor (MBD) 92

3.  Les Jordan (MBD) 82

Team Cafe Ninety 4 was poorly represented today with only 8 starters, whilst Team Pizza Cafe Mildura and Team Malidot Building & Development had 10 and 12 respectively.  PCM riders collected 660 points, MBD 688 points and CN4 riders only 493 points.

Winter Season 2011 Presentations & AGM

Twenty seven members and guests gathered at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club on Saturday 17 September to attend the Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club’s Winter Season 2011 presentations and Annual General Meeting.  Club Vice President Dean Taylor, standing in for President Mark Phillips, welcomed all members and guests, including Life Members Barry Pollock and Kevin Tankard.

Dean noted that the first two trophies normally presented each year, the Spring Tour and the Lunarfest Criterium Championship, were not awarded this year.  The 2010 Spring Tour saw no result declared due to an accident on the last lap and the Lunarfest race was not held in 2011.

The first trophy event of the Winter 2011 season was the Autumn Classic race.  This 108 km handicap race was held in May on a new course based on Cureton Avenue, between Riverside and Red Cliffs.  Riders had to complete three laps of this out and back course.  Rachel Hanlin broke away from her starting group and rode the last 10 km of the race solo to claim the win and the autumn leaf trophy.

The next trophy event on the program was the Special Trophies Day in June, where 5 trophies were up for grabs.  As usual, the various races on the day were scratch events held at Riverside with:

·       Richard Hale winning the Whizzer White Open Trophy;

·       Ian Beruldsen took out the Ned Kelly Veterans Trophy;

·       Tom Athorn again won the Ralph Morrish Over 50’s Trophy, for the fourth consecutive time;

·       Alison Curry won the Ladies Perpetual Trophy; and

·       Thomas Allford (U/15) took out the Whizzer White Juniors Trophy.

Dean then described how July saw the running of the 2011 Club Championship, an 80 km scratch race held at Riverside.  A total of only 18 riders contested the event, which saw most of the field contest a bunch sprint finish.  Dean noted how he was the fastest on the day and claimed the title of 2011 Club Champion!  As well as the trophy, Dean was awarded a specially printed Club jersey and a set of knicks.  Thomas Allford was awarded his second trophy of the night for winning the Junior Club Championship race.

The battle for the various grades was again a feature of the season and in most cases there was a clear winner in each grade, with each winner being presented with a trophy as follows:

·       Junior B Grade – no qualifying riders;

·       Junior A Grade – Thomas Allford (669 points);

·       D Grade Terry Miller (514 points);

·       C Grade Michael Allford (561 points).  This win will surely be rewarded with a promotion to B Grade for Summer?

·       B Grade Ben Athorn (588 points); and

·       A Grade Dean Taylor (637 points).

Dean then announced the winner of the Club trophies, starting with the Les Julian Most Improved Rider award.  Dean explained that the winner was selected by Committee vote using the following criteria:

1.     Must be a financial member;

2.     Must have competed on a regular basis in both the Summer and Winter seasons over last 12 months; and

3.     Must have demonstrated a marked improvement in competitive riding.

The Committee couldn’t split the efforts of two riders with the trophy being jointly awarded to Ben Athorn and Thomas Allford.

The next award to be presented was the Barry Pollock Coach’s Award.  As the current Club Coach, Barry has been active over the last 12 months, holding regular weekly training sessions with the junior riders, as well as providing training programs to those senior riders that requested assistance.  Coupled with his role of Chief Handicapper for the season, Barry has had a great opportunity to observe the hard work that many riders have put in and was thus well qualified to decide upon the winner of this award.  Barry explained how he had considered various riders for the award before deciding that awards should be presented to a senior and junior rider.  Barry selected Thomas Allford as the winner of the junior award and Richard Hale as the winner of the senior award.

The next award to be presented was that of Rider of the Year.  This award recognises the efforts of senior and junior riders in competitive cycling over the last 12 months and is based on results in Club events (Summer & Winter), open events and state, national and international events.  This year saw a close contest between two riders, Taryn Heather and Thomas Allford.   Whilst Taryn didn’t contest any races on the Winter program her open, state, national and international results saw her amass 2,094 points (113 points more than Thomas) and be declared Rider of the Year.

The last award of the evening was that the Club Person of the Year.  Dean explained how the winner was selected by Committee vote, taking into account the following criteria:

1.     Must be a financial member;

2.     Must have made an ongoing voluntary contribution to the running of the Club; and

3.     They must have undertaken these activities in a positive manner, without seeking reward or recognition.

The Committee considered a number of members as candidates for this award before eventually deciding on Penny Hale as the winner.

The Club also had a draw for a participation prize, for those members who competed in 12 or more Club or open events during Winter.  Twenty two riders qualified for the draw.  Thanks to Angas Park and Michael Allford for providing the prize, which was a hamper and two bottles of wine.  Penny was asked to draw out the winners name from the Whizzer White cup … which was Michael Smith!

Following dinner the Annual General Meeting was convened with Richard Hale presenting the Secretary and Treasurer reports, the latter on behalf of Greg Scott who was unable to attend the evening.  Club Vice President Dean Taylor then declared all Committee and Racing Official positions vacant and thanked the outgoing Executives and Officials for their efforts over the last 12 months.  Dean then listed the nominees for the various roles and following voting the vacant roles were filled as follows:

As the new Club President Michael Allford then thanked all volunteers who assisted on race days and in the running of the Club’s business, in particular Julieanne Ryan, Penny Hale, Wendy Allford and Barry Pollock.  Before closing the meeting, Michael also thanked the Board of Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club for its ongoing support during 2011 and also the Club’s sponsors, including Pizza Café, Malidot Construction, Bicycle Superstore, Oasis Auto Services and Northstar Motors.

Race to the Sun - Program Change

Due to the low level of nominations for this weekend’s Race to the Sun (RTTS), we will not be able to hold a meaningful teams based event as planned.  Instead, we will replace the programmed race with the following:

·         Saturday 3 September 1:00 pm – 38 km handicap race (1 lap of the Riverside to Red Cliffs circuit); and

·         Sunday 4 September 8:30 am – 45 minutes graded criterium (Seventh St circuit, mass start but graded result).

 There would be no teams format to the above proposed races.  Pizza Café vouchers are on offer to the winner of each grade for the Sunday criterium.

Riders who have paid the season nomination fee would not have to pay a nomination fee for either race (as per the race program).  Those riders who have not paid the season fee would need to pay $9 for each race.

MyLaps won’t be updated to reflect the above change, so please nominate for the scheduled RTTS event and confirm in the comments area whether you intend racing one or both races.

Club Championship 2011 Results

The MCCC 2011 Club Championship was run at Riverside on Saturday 30 July.  With damp roads and a threatening sky, 18 senior and four junior riders contested the Club's premier event.  The senior riders had to complete eight laps of the long course, whilst the juniors rode over three laps.  The first lap was neutralised for seniors and the juniors rode under neutral conditions for the first 3 km.

The senior race was characterised by numerous attacks but none were successful in establishing a winning break.  At the start of the final lap there were still 12 riders together to contest a bunch sprint finish.  Dean Taylor proved to have the fastest legs on the day and emerged a clear winner from Ben Nicholson and Gary Henderson.  Taylor has finally put his name on a Club race trophy!

In the junior race Thomas Allford proved too strong for his fellow competitors, eventually dropping his breakaway companion Nathan Jordan and riding solo to victory.

Congratulations to both riders!
